Masquerave Albany 2012

VJ / Live Visual Designer
Project Overview
Masquerave was a large‑scale EDM event held at the historic Washington Avenue Armory, bringing together DJs, dancers, and a high‑energy audience for a fully immersive, festival‑style experience. The production combined concert‑level lighting, projection, and atmospheric effects to transform the Armory’s arena into a theatrical, mask‑themed rave environment.
My Contributions
I served as the event’s VJ and live visual designer, responsible for creating, programming, and performing the video and lighting‑integrated visual experience throughout the night. My work included developing custom visual content, synchronizing video playback with DJ sets, and operating a flexible, improvisation‑ready system that allowed me to respond dynamically to the energy of the crowd and the pacing of each performer’s music.

Creative & Technical Approach

My design philosophy for Masquerave centered on building a visual environment that matched the scale and intensity of the Armory while embracing the event’s masquerade theme. I curated a library of custom video loops, motion graphics, and color palettes that blended neon, abstract textures, and mask‑inspired imagery.

Because EDM events demand real‑time responsiveness, I developed a live performance workflow that allowed me to manipulate visuals on the fly—adjusting tempo, color, and composition to align with drops, transitions, and stylistic shifts from each DJ. This improvisational capability ensured that the visuals felt alive, reactive, and tightly integrated with the music.

System Design & Operation

I built and operated a multi‑layer VJ system capable of:

  • Real‑time video mixing and effects
  • Beat‑matched playback synchronized with DJ sets
  • Integration with intelligent lighting fixtures
  • Rapid cue changes to support high‑energy transitions
  • On‑the‑spot troubleshooting in a fast‑moving live environment

The Armory’s scale required careful planning of projection angles, screen placement, and signal routing. I coordinated with the lighting team, audio engineers, and event promoters to ensure all visual elements supported the overall production design.

Collaboration & Live Execution

Throughout the event, I worked closely with resident and guest DJs to match their musical style and performance flow. This included pre‑show discussions about set pacing and in‑the‑moment communication during key transitions.

I also collaborated with the lighting operator to align color palettes, strobes, and movement patterns with the video content, creating a cohesive audiovisual experience that filled the Armory’s massive space.

Outcome & Impact

Masquerave delivered a high‑impact, immersive environment that elevated the energy of the crowd and reinforced the event’s theatrical theme. The synchronized lighting and video design contributed to a festival‑level atmosphere rarely seen in Albany at the time.

The event strengthened my reputation in the regional EDM scene as a VJ capable of handling large‑format venues, improvisational performance demands, and complex multimedia integration. It also helped refine the flexible programming strategies I would continue to use in later club, concert, and touring environments.
